#14: Building Communication Skills with Ian Roth

Does the idea of presenting in front of a group of people fill you with dread? You’re not alone – a lot of us fear of public speaking. But as leaders, we need to know how to communicate effectively. That means overcoming our anxiety when public speaking and building our communication skills.

That’s why Ian Roth originally started Talking Llama Media and his Get Heard podcast. He helps people improve their leadership skills by leveling up their communication and public speaking. People have different leadership styles, but a lot of techniques work no matter your industry or style. Ian’s also a podcaster, so we have plenty of chat around podcasting equipment and some tricks and tools.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • How Ian began Talking Llama Media after realizing a lot of his peers lacked good communication skills and needed public speaking tips. (1:07)

  • Ian’s secret to working on side hustles and balancing them with a full-time job, a wife, and three kids. (3:48)

  • Ian’s process and mindset for creating content centered around leadership, communication, public speaking, and podcasting. (6:32)

  • Why podcasting is like a new form of social media. (8:07)

  • Ian’s new podcast, the Talking Llama Podcast, which offers advice and resources for podcasters – both current and aspiring ones. (8:43)

  • The idea behind PodXP, a creative way to gamify podcasting. (12:45)

  • A wayyyyy too deep of a dive into the original Pokemon games. Shout out to Beedrill! (15:33)

  • The question Ian believes all great leaders should ask more frequently. (19:40)

  • The top three traits that every leader should have. (24:32)
