#72: Mental Health and the Healing Power of Music with Kimberly Dawn

GPCT Podcast Kimberly Dawn Header.jpg

Here’s a statement that should surprise no one: the past year and a half has been rough. Between a global pandemic, social unrest, political chaos, and the fact that a lot of us navigated it all by ourselves, there’s certainly been plenty of chances for life to take its toll on our well-being.

This week’s guest, Kimberly Dawn, is a big advocate of mental health. Kimberly just dropped her new single “The Bottle,” co-written with multi-award-winning songwriter Jeff Cohen. The song has a strong message about the importance of checking in with yourself, courage, and connection to community. Kimberly participated in the “You Are Not Alone” campaign with the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Kimberly didn’t start her music career until she was 30, but she’s already making fast work in the country industry. “The Bottle” is the latest in a line of jams, and Kimberly’s storytelling is raw, honest, and encouraging. And lucky for us, we’re chatting about all of the above — and more.

Quick note: Apologies for the first minute of this interview, where there’s some background noise on Kimberly’s end. But she’s still quite audible and sounds crystal clear for the rest of things. Which is great because she has plenty to share!

Highlights of our conversation include:
