#97: Unique Album Concepts, Interesting People, and Travel Destinations with Mic Nickels

We’re kicking off a new season of Good People, Cool Things with someone who’s traveled all across the world. One of the greatest elements of hip-hop is storytelling, and a combination of seeing different cultures and meeting new people can lead to some fantastic results.

Mic Nickels is a New York-based rapper who just dropped his new album Bars for Days. Not only is this new album full of music—including multiple Grammy-winning artists and a collaboration with Method Man of the Wu-Tang Clan—it also serves as an autobiography.

Mic shares the process of creating both an album and book at the same time, some of the most interesting people he’s worked with, and offers a few must-see sights of the world.

Highlights of our conversation include

  • Mic’s new album Bars for Days and how it’s both a record AND a book. (2:37)

  • A brief detour reflecting on our shared experiences as graduates of the University of Miami. Go Canes! (4:40)

  • The most interesting people Mic has met throughout his life, from Dave Chappelle to Tommy Chong. (5:45)

  • The worst gigs Mic has ever played as a musician. (9:12)

  • A look inside Mic’s nine-piece band Nickel and Dime Ops, and how this jazz rap fusion band got started. (11:34)

  • Some of the best ways to connect with fans on social media. (18:00)

  • How to keep the culture of hip-hop going strong in a time when everyone’s constantly using cell phones and other technology. (21:15)

  • Mic’s new single “Sky City” featuring Teen AF, what it was like to shoot a music video in the midst of a pandemic, and a sneak peek of his new video “The Phantom.” (23:52)

  • What Mic sees for his future, including a lot more writing and ways he can impact humanity in positive ways. (29:04)

  • The top three places Mic has visited. (30:40)
