#43: Real Feels, 90s One-Hit Wonders, and Bad Acting Gigs with Brad Gage

As an actor, host, emcee, and podcaster, Brad Gage has met a ton of interesting people — and he’s certainly one himself. He’s appeared in movies and TV shows like Timeless and Jane the Virgin and has hosted content for Hulu, Mercedes-Benz, American’s Funniest Home Videos, and more. Throughout it all, there’s been one consistent: a love of having conversations and getting to know people.

That’s what Brad’s new podcast, Real Feels, is all about. Our society is constantly re-defining what it means to be a man, and Brad asks guests to be vulnerable about masculinity and gender issues. His guests dive into who they are now, who they aim to be, and the space in between as they embark on their journey.

We’re hitting lots of topics in this episode, including a terrible acting gig Brad once had, the power of restorative justice, and some of the best 90s one-hit wonders. Be sure to check out Brad’s playlist at the bottom of this page.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • Brad talks about his latest venture, Real Feels, and we share some of our favorite moments on elevators. (3:35)

  • Why now is the right time for a show on conversations about masculine stereotypes and addressing tougher issues in gender labels. (9:50)

  • Brad and I share our favorite 90s one hit wonders, including Silverchair, Tal Bachman, and Harvey Danger. (13:13)

  • The secret to how to conduct a good interview and get the best conversations with people. (17:40)

  • How restorative justice is being applied and why Brad believes it will become more common in the coming decade. (23:00)

  • A look inside Brad’s previous podcast, Explain Things to Me, and his favorite interviews from the show. (26:53)

  • One of the quarantine hobbies Brad has started doing during social distancing, and an entirely too nerdy discussion around our experience with playing drums. (31:50)

  • The worst acting gig Brad has ever had, which involves a feature film movie script, a Doritos commercial, and jumping into a pool — and it’s quite spectacular. (40:20)

  • Brad shares his top Beatles song of all-time. (48:15)

  • The top three vegan cheeses to try. (51:04)
